Flood Recovery Program.

Flood Recovery Program.

NGNU supported the Aboriginal Housing Office with delivery of flood recovery housing works across the mid and north coast of NSW, including communities such as Kempsey (Dunghutti Country) and Muli Muli (Bundjalung Country). Our role included project management, superintendent inspections, WHS oversight, and stakeholder liaison to ensure homes were repaired and upgraded in line with AHO standards.

The program delivered urgent housing outcomes to Aboriginal families impacted by natural disasters, requiring rapid mobilisation and culturally responsive engagement.

The challenge.

The main challenge was responding quickly to extensive flooding across multiple communities in regional NSW. Many homes had suffered severe water damage, requiring structural rectification, service upgrades, and full compliance with AHO design and quality standards. The urgency of the works demanded fast mobilisation of contractors while maintaining governance, safety, and cultural sensitivity. In addition, dispersed project locations across the mid and north coast meant coordinating multiple contractors and navigating latent site conditions, while ensuring communication with both the AHO and affected Aboriginal communities.

How we delivered success.

NGNU established clear governance processes, chairing Project Control Group meetings and providing transparent reporting to the AHO. Frequent superintendent inspections and quality audits ensured compliance with design and WHS requirements. Our culturally grounded approach built trust with local Aboriginal communities, reflecting NGNU’s broader expertise in community engagement and its majority Aboriginal ownership. In addition, NGNU’s ongoing corporate social responsibility contributions, including support for Aboriginal community events and education initiatives, strengthened relationships and created positive outcomes beyond the project itself. By combining structured project management with cultural integrity, NGNU enabled the safe, compliant, and timely restoration of flood-affected housing across multiple communities.
