NGNU is engaged to support the NSW Government and its partners in embedding cultural values into the planning and delivery of the Bradfield Aerotropolis and associated precincts in Western Sydney. Our role includes providing cultural advice for the Bradfield Masterplan, creating the Recognise Country Template to guide development applications, and contributing to the planning of Bradfield City Centre Park.

These initiatives form part of a broader Designing with Country approach that ensures Aboriginal knowledge, culture, and connection to Country inform the creation of Australia’s newest city.

The challenge.

The planning and development of Bradfield involves multiple stakeholders, including government agencies, developers, and local communities, all operating under complex statutory planning frameworks. The challenge is to embed Aboriginal cultural knowledge and values into this process in a way that is authentic, practical, and enduring. Developing frameworks that balance cultural integrity with planning legislation requires ongoing consultation, transparent governance, and the ability to translate cultural input into clear planning and design guidance.

How we delivered success.

NGNU has facilitated engagement processes that reflect local cultural governance structures, ensuring Aboriginal perspectives are embedded in masterplanning outcomes. The Recognise Country Template developed by NGNU has been adopted as a guiding tool for all development applications within the precinct, setting a benchmark for culturally informed planning. Through our contributions to the Bradfield Masterplan and City Centre Park, NGNU is helping shape a city that reflects both cultural heritage and contemporary community needs. By combining technical planning expertise with cultural integrity, NGNU is demonstrating how Designing with Country can be a practical and repeatable model for major urban development.
